Election News: Labour Make Early Gains As Local Election Results Come In

Early results have started to come in from yesterday's local elections, although results for the majority of councils, mayoral races, and police and crime commissioner races are expected to come in throughout today and tomorrow.

As of 6am, results were in from 33 councils, with the Conservatives down a net -117 seats, Labour up a net +58, and with the Liberal Democrats and Greens up +14 seats and +12 seats respectively.

The number of independent councillors was up by a net +33. Labour has gained control of councils in Redditch, Hartlepool, Thurrock, and Rushmoor, with three gains from Conservative control and one from no overall control.

The results of two police and crime commissioner elections have been declared - with Labour's David Allen ousting the Conservatives, and with Conservative Marc Jones retaining his position in Lincolnshire.
