Whichever composer Llŷr Williams chooses to turn his hand to, he manages to elicit considered and reflective qualities. There is such poetry in his interpretations that have an air of expressive intimacy. His musicality is first-rate, and his technique and touch are exemplary.
As the title alludes to, each of the pieces on this album cover early and late Brahms, with the F minor sonata composed when Brahms was twenty. Williams is particularly adept at the pianissimo, and through such a delicate touch, there is an intensity that doesn’t let go; like a feather floating in the breeze, its softness is graceful and elegant as it undulates and then dissipates, rather like Williams’ sensitive playing. And then, where there is momentum, the pace quickens; Williams’ does so with stylistic energy and exactitude, faithful to Brahms score, never compromising the dynamic range or phrasing; he is in control, and that is what makes this recording special.
The artistry is enthralling, the contrasts compelling, and the signum engineers have captured it all so beautifully. On these hibernal evenings when the cold and damp circle like mythical sirens, put this double album on and feel the warmth and textures of the Williams’ playing embrace you.
Superlatively performed - a recital that will not disappoint.
