Cleaning Up After Storm Eowyn

The weeks following Storm Eowyn kept us busy. We had managed to move the goats and pigs to the stables so that they had somewhere warm and dry to shelter but time was of the essence to get their paddocks re-fenced and their housing fixed as goats and pigs ideally need to be outside. They were getting more and more agitated by the day and it didn’t feel kind keeping them indoors when I knew they longed to be in their paddocks.

My husband, Mark, got to work getting the goat houses and shelters upright and fixing the broken fences, and, once again, Smiths Sectional Buildings came to our rescue. We ordered two new pig arks, which were made and delivered within the week. The guys also dismantled the goat shelters that had blown over the fence during the storm, fixed them, and re-erected them in a position that will hopefully be more sheltered should any future storms threaten them again.

Although the shelters had been fastened to the ground, we took the advice of Smiths Sectional Buildings and purchased some stronger bolts to anchor them all down.

The damage sustained by Storm Eowyn was soul-destroying, and the clean-up was long and arduous, but it could have been much worse. I thank my lucky stars that none of the animals were hurt and that the only pain was to my bank balance!

It was unfortunate that we had only moved into our new property less than three months previously, so we hadn’t had much time to consider exposure to the elements. It was a hard lesson but certainly one that we have taken on board, and while I can’t be certain that we won’t get caught out again, I do feel confident that we have done all we can to ensure our animals and their shelters remain safe and secure.

The goats and pigs are now back where they belong – in their paddocks – with new housing kitted out with mats, straw and, for the little pigs, brand-new blankets!

I cannot praise Smiths Sectional Buildings enough for their hard work, long hours and great advice – this is a company I would highly recommend!
