Luxury SUV The Audi Way – Q7 On Test
The latest Audi Q7 PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) combines luxury, performance, and efficiency in a premium SUV package. This updated model brings significant improvements to Audi's flagship SUV, offering a compelling option for those seeking a versatile and eco-friendly vehicle.
Design and Exterior
The Q7's exterior design has been subtly refreshed, with a cleaner front fascia and updated headlight signature. While the changes are not dramatic, they help keep the Q7's appearance modern and imposing.
Powertrain and Performance
The Q7 PHEV is available in two variants: the 55 TFSI e quattro and the more powerful 60 TFSI e quattro. Both models feature a 3.0-litre V6 petrol engine paired with an electric motor.
The 55 TFSI e quattro delivers a system output of 381hp and 600Nm of torque, while the 60 TFSI e quattro boasts an impressive 462hp and 700Nm of torque.
Performance is impressive for a vehicle of this size, with the 55 TFSI e quattro accelerating from 0-62mph in 5.7 seconds.
The electric motor alone provides 176hp and up to 450Nm of torque, ensuring smooth and responsive performance even in pure electric mode.
Electric Range and Efficiency
One of the most significant improvements in the latest Q7 PHEV is its electric range. The new liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery now offers 22 kWh net (25.9 kWh gross) of energy storage. This translates to an electric range of up to 52 miles according to WLTP standards. In urban areas, this range can extend up to 56 miles.
The Q7 PHEV's efficiency is further enhanced by its intelligent energy management system. The predictive efficiency assist (PEA) uses navigation data and traffic information to optimize the use of electric power and recuperation.
In charge mode, the battery recharges intelligently above speeds of approximately 65 km/h, maximizing efficiency in city driving and stop-and-go traffic.
With a maximum AC charging rate of 7.4kW, the Q7 PHEV can be fully charged in about 2.5 hours using a wallbox, or around 8 hours with a domestic socket. The official fuel economy figure is an impressive 104.6mpg, though real-world results will vary depending on driving patterns and charging frequency.
However, once the battery is completely empty, as I found out on a long run, expect low 20s mpg from the Q7.
Driving Experience
The Q7 PHEV retains the refined and comfortable driving experience of its conventional counterparts. The transition between electric and hybrid modes is exceptionally smooth, with the petrol engine seamlessly engaging when required.
The vehicle offers multiple driving modes, including a pure-EV setting for zero-emission driving and a 'charge hold' mode to maintain battery level for later use.
New options such as all-wheel steering and electromechanical active roll stabilization enhance the driving dynamics, providing a more engaging experience despite the vehicle's size.
The steering is well-weighted and responsive, although some drivers may find it lacks feedback. The optional all-wheel steering fitted to the test car aided manoeuvrability in tight spots.
Interior and Practicality
The Q7 PHEV's interior exemplifies Audi's reputation for quality and technology. The cabin features high-grade materials and impeccable build quality. The latest model includes Audi's dual-screen infotainment system, which may take some getting used to due to its haptic feedback.
One compromise of the PHEV system is reduced practicality compared to the standard Q7. The battery pack eliminates the third row of seats, making this a five-seater instead of a seven-seater. However, the remaining space is still generous, with ample headroom and legroom for passengers.
Conclusion
The latest Audi Q7 PHEV represents a significant step forward in the luxury SUV segment. It successfully combines the comfort and prestige expected from an Audi with decent electric capabilities and improved efficiency. The extended electric range makes it a viable option for those with shorter daily commutes, potentially allowing for mostly electric operation. However, potential buyers should consider the compromises in seating capacity and boot space compared to the standard Q7.
The higher initial cost of the PHEV variant should also be weighed against potential fuel savings and tax benefits. Overall, the Audi Q7 PHEV offers a compelling package for those seeking a premium, eco-friendly SUV. Its blend of performance, luxury, and efficiency makes it a strong contender in an increasingly competitive market segment. Whether it's the right choice will depend on individual needs and driving patterns, but for many, it could represent the best of both worlds – combining the versatility of a large SUV with the efficiency and environmental benefits of electrification.
