Matthew Scullion Founder Of Matillion Named EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2021 UK

Matthew Scullion, CEO of Matillion, has been named the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2021 UK overall winner, after the company achieved unicorn status earlier this year.

Matillion is a data company, whose solutions aim to increase business performance and value by extracting and loading data in one move, and then using a cloud data warehouse to handle transformations. Matthew was recognised by the independent judging panel for his innovative mindset and ability to turn business challenges into a competitive edge.

Matthew Scullion said:
“It’s a privilege to win the title - and get to represent the best of this year’s entrepreneurs on behalf of the UK, which I feel extremely passionate about.

“I want to thank all 400-plus people that make up the Matillion team – Matillion exists to make the lives of our customers better and service their needs, but it’s the team that makes that happen.

“Through this programme you meet other entrepreneurs building businesses: these are talented driven people living through the same life stage as you, and you learn a huge deal through them. Entrepreneur Of The Year is a thorough test, by peers who know what they’re talking about, and that makes participating in it all the more interesting, fun and ultimately satisfying.”

EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2021 UK follows a series of regional awards that were held earlier in the year, in which 102 entrepreneurs were named as finalists. As the overall UK winner, Matthew will now go on to participate at World Entrepreneur Of The Year next year, where he will compete with entrepreneurial talent from across the globe.

Having started his first company aged 18, which was subsequently sold to an American company, Matthew founded Matillion in 2011. Matillion has grown from a team of 18 people in 2015 with a turnover of £1m, to a company with over 400 branches across the UK and US, including in Manchester, Denver, New York and Seattle. In 2021, Matillion created 180 jobs for the Greater Manchester area alone as the company gears up for further international expansion.

Victoria Price, EY UK Private Tax Leader and EY Entrepreneur Of The Year UK Partner Lead said:
“EY Entrepreneur Of The Year celebrates ground breaking business leaders from across the length and breadth of the country – and they don’t come any more inspiring than Matthew. As our overall winner, Matthew, has shown drive and determination, developing a culture of innovation that is at the heart of Matillion’s DNA.”

Commenting on this year’s EY Entrepreneur Of The Year 2021 UK award winner, Chair of the Judging Panel, Sophie Cornish, MBE, said:
“This was an exceptionally impressive line-up of entrepreneurs, spanning a multitude of sectors from across the UK. After much deliberation, the judging panel was honoured to name Matthew Scullion as our overall UK winner, recognising his entrepreneurial mindset and achievements. Matthew is consolidating and structuring data in a manner that will enable businesses to make data-driven decisions to drive high impact outcomes. The panel was impressed by his innovative mindset and ambition to bring about change for the future, not just for clients but for the communities they’re impacting.”
