Self-gifting over the festive period is on the rise this year as over a third of UK adults (36%) feel more comfortable treating themselves this year compared to 2023, according to new research from John Lewis Money.

Over a third (38%) of people are spending more on themselves this year, with 35% also treating themselves more regularly.

Key reasons for this change in self-treating include a feeling of having gone too long without treating themselves (26%), opting for smaller purchases (30%), and discovering more affordable ways to indulge (25%).

Frequent comforts like buying a coffee, eating out, ordering takeaways and shopping for clothes are among the most popular treats being bought.

How we treat ourselves

When it comes to treating and self-gifting, the research finds that many are leaning towards little pleasures enjoyed frequently - with 66% prioritising smaller, regular indulgences over larger, occasional splurges.

In terms of the type of treats enjoyed, 46% prefer experiences over material items, like taking a short trip or attending a special event. But for others, treating themselves to physical items — whether it’s new clothes, gadgets, or beauty products—still hold their appeal, with 56% saying they enjoy these types of purchases.

Top 10 ways to treat yourself, according to the research:
1. Sweet treat (e.g. chocolate) – 46%
2. Eating out or ordering takeaway – 44%
3. Buying a coffee – 36%
4. Shopping for clothes – 31%
5. A lazy day at home – 31%
6. Spending on hobbies – 23%
7. Travel or mini-breaks – 22%
8. Buying premium groceries – 20%
9. Buying a beauty product – 17%
10. Special events or experiences – 16%

Finding new ways to treat yourself

Despite feeling more comfortable with self-treating, the higher cost of living remains a factor for many. Over half (54%) of respondents said that high living costs prevent them from buying for themselves as much as they would like. To help manage their budgets, one in five (20%) are using vouchers or paying with loyalty card points to help fund their treats.

Andy Piggott at John Lewis Money said:
“Treating yourself, even with small indulgences such as a coffee or something nice to eat can be a great way to bring little pleasures into your day.

“To help budgets go further, don’t forget about vouchers or points that you may have accrued throughout the year from credit or loyalty cards - these can often add up. Using them to fund self-gifting or treats can be an effective way to stretch your budget.”
