Sports Personality of the Year 2024 - Winners and Nominees

The BBC’s annual Sports Personality of the Year awards night was held on Tuesday 17th December, with 800m Olympic Champion Keely Hodgkinson taking home the main award, becoming the fourth consecutive female winner.
Sports Personality of the Year 2024
800m Olympic Champion Keely Hodgkinson was named this year’s Sports Personality of the Year making her the fourth consecutive female winner of the award. She won gold at the Paris Olympics in the 800m, going one better than her Tokyo silver medal. The 22-year-old won 800m gold at the European Championships whilst also setting a new British record of 1:54:61 at the Diamond League meeting in London.
The first runner-up was teenage darts sensation Luke Littler who won three PDC major finals in 2024 and came runner-up in two. The Warrington-born darts player also claimed two PDC world series finals whilst finishing runner-up in the Dutch and Australian Darts Masters.
The second runner-up was cricketer Joe Root MBE, who in October this year overtook Sir Alastair Cook as England’s highest test run scorer of all time whilst also becoming the fifth highest test run scorer in history. In the same innings, the Yorkshireman and teammate Harry Brook broke the England record for highest scoring test partnership as they recorded 454 runs against Pakistan.
Dame Sarah Storey was also nominated for the award after she won her 19th Paralympic Gold Medal at the Paris Paralympics as she claimed gold in both the C4-C5 Road Race and C5 Road Time Trial events.
Men’s Triathlon Olympic Gold Medalist Alex Yee was also nominated after he became only the second man in history to win both the World and Olympic Triathlon titles in a single year. The 26-year-old’s bronze medal in the mixed relay at the Paris Olympics also makes him the most successful Olympic male triathlete of all time.
England and Real Madrid striker Jude Bellingham completed the list of nominees, after his added time winner helped Real Madrid to win El Clásico 3–2. His winner made him Madrid's all-time top English scorer overtaking Laurie Cunningham and David Beckham with 21 goals. The 21-year-old also finished runner-up with England at the 2024 men’s Euros after his assist in the final brought the game level at 1-1 before a late Spain goal claimed the title.
World Sports Star of the Year 2024
Swedish pole vaulter Armand Duplantis claimed the award after he retained his Olympic title making him the first back-to-back male champion since the 1950s. He broke the Olympic record at the Paris Olympics, and also broke the World Record for the third time this year at the Diamond league meet in August as he recorded a height of 6.26m.
American Gymnast Simone Biles was also nominated for the award after claiming three Olympic gold medals and one silver medal at the Paris Olympics. She won gold in the team and individual all-around competitions as well as the women’s vault. Her individual all-around gold makes her only the third ever female gymnast to win two Olympic gold medals in the all-around.
Fellow American Caitlin Clark was also nominated, with the basketball player breaking multiple WNBA rookie records after being drafted overall first pick by the Indiana Fever. Throughout the 2024 WNBA season she set league single-season and single-game records in assists whilst also breaking the rookie scoring record.
Swiss wheelchair racer Catherine Debrunner was nominated after she won five gold medals and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics. She claimed the T54 Marathon Olympic title after leading the event from the start. She also won the 2024 London Marathon with a time of 01:38:54.
Dutch runner Sifan Hassan was also nominated after she became the first and only woman to win an Olympic gold medal in the 5,000 metres (2020 Tokyo Olympics), 10,000 metres (2020 Tokyo Olympics) and Marathon races (2024 Paris Olympics). She also won bronze medals in both the 5,000 and 10,000 metres at the Paris Olympics making her the first Olympian (male or female) to win a medal in all three events at a single Olympics.

French swimmer Leon Marchand was also shortlisted for the award after he finished with the most gold medals for a single competitor at the 2024 Paris Olympics. He won four gold medals and one bronze medal, breaking four Olympics records in the process. He also won all gold medals in all three medley events at the three World Cup legs in 2024 held in Shanghai, Incheon and Singapore.
Young Sports Personality of the Year
Sports Personality of the Year runner-up Luke Littler won the Young Sports Personality of the Year award after the 17-year-olds breakthrough year saw him win 10 senior titles this year and make two televised nine-dart finishes at the Bahrain Darts Masters and the 2024 Premier League Darts tournament.
Paralympic swimmer William Ellard was also shortlisted for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award after he won three medals including two golds and a silver medal at the Paris Paralympics. He lowered the 200m freestyle S14 world record by over a second after he won the Olympic title. He also won two golds, a silver and a bronze medal at the 2024 European Championships once again claiming the 200m freestyle S14 title.
Olympic skateboarder Sky Brown was also nominated for the award after she won a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics in the women’s park skateboarding event. This bronze medal gave her two consecutive medals at the Olympic games after she also placed 3rd in the women’s park skateboarding event in Tokyo.
Team of the Year
Rugby League side Wigan Warriors completed the quadruple this year as they won every title that was available to them. Throughout the year they won the World Club Challenge (after defeating NRL Champions Penrith Panthers), the Challenge Cup (after defeating Warrington Wolves), the League Leaders Shield and the Grand Final (after defeating Yorkshire side Hull Kingston Rovers).
Coach of the Year
Athletics’ coaches Trevor Painter and Jenny Meadows produced three medalists for Great Britain at the Paris Olympics. The Manchester-based duo coached Sports Personality of the Year 2024 winner Keely Hodgkinson, as well as bronze medalists Georgia Bell (1500m) and Lewis Davey (men’s 4x400m relay).
Lifetime Achievement Award
Sir Mark Cavendish won the lifetime achievement award after retiring earlier this year. The 39-year-old won a record 35th Tour de France stage at the 2024 competition. Throughout his career he also won 55 grand tour stages (ranking him 3rd of all time) and he took 165 professional victories (ranking him 2nd of all time).

Helen Rollason Award
Former boxer Dr Mark Prince won the Helen Rollason award after founding the Kiyan Prince Foundation which aims to bring young people into boxing to keep them away from knife crime. The foundation also conducts research to further their support of young people in improving their futures.
Unsung Hero Award
90-year-old Jean Paton is a Royal Yachting Association dinghy instructor who helped over 800 children learn how to sail at the Salterns Sailing Club in Lymington, Hampshire. In her around four decades of work with the club, she has undertaken a range of roles which have helped children in a range of development areas.
