A new church congregation has been launched in Lancashire this week to ensure deaf people can access worship in a way that is meaningful and inclusive to them; while also being rooted in the local community.
Preston Deaf Church, founded by Ribbleton Parish, began meeting at The Church of the Ascension. There were 21 people at the first service, which came about following nine months of prayer, planning and preparation.
It marked an encouraging start for a ministry designed to serve deaf people and their families across Preston and the surrounding area.
The service was led by Canon Linda Tomkinson, supported by Lorraine, Libby and a committed team of volunteers. They have all worked together to bring the vision to life.
From the outset the intention was to create a welcoming space for worship, fellowship and shared faith and the reaction from those who attended was very positive.
The new congregation reflects a growing commitment by Ribbleton Parish to ensure church is accessible to all; enabling more people to encounter God’s love and play a full part in church life. This mirrors the wider aims of the Diocese as a whole.

Canon Linda Tomkinson from Ribbleton Parish said: "It has been wonderful to see our vision become a reality after many months of planning. The response from those who attended has been incredibly encouraging, and we look forward to building on this strong foundation as Preston Deaf Church develops in the months and years ahead."
Rt Rev Dr Joe Kennedy, Bishop of Burnley, also welcomed the initiative and praised those involved. He said today: "This is a wonderful example of the Church responding to need in a thoughtful and innovative way. Preston Deaf Church is helping to remove barriers to worship, ensuring that deaf people are able to encounter the love of God in accessible and life-giving ways.
"Across the Diocese, we are committed to ensuring that everyone can take their place in the worshipping life of the Church. Initiatives like this are an important part of that ongoing work.
“We want all people, whatever their circumstances, to be able to worship equally, belong fully and share their gifts within the Body of Christ."

The launch service concluded with refreshments, giving those who attended the opportunity to meet, share stories and begin building relationships.
Organisers hope the new congregation will continue to grow and become a place where deaf people can deepen their faith and contribute their gifts to the wider Christian community.
Preston Deaf Church will now meet every Sunday at 2pm at the Church of the Ascension, 454 Watling Street Road, Preston, PR2 6UA.
