Our phones are an integral part of our lives, especially when we are on holiday, as it has essential information like booking details and travel money cards that we need to access on a daily basis - so when your phone breaks or is stolen, it can feel like the end of the world.

So how can you protect your phone while holidaying in the UK or abroad this year?

Likewize Repair have offered their top tips for looking after your phone, if you’re planning a trip away this year.

Keep your phone out of direct sunlight

One of the most common problems Brits face when on holiday is their phone overheating, due to the sun and temperature outside.

If your phone gets too hot it can actually cause permanent damage, such as battery drain, forced shut down and not being able to restart.

To protect your phone while away, it's best to keep it out of direct sunlight, as the longer your phone remains in sunlight, the hotter it will get.

Don't keep your phone in your back pocket

Aside from damage, another thing to be aware of while on holiday, is your phone being stolen. Pickpocketing is extremely common in certain areas of Europe.

To keep your phone safe, make sure to avoid putting it in your back pocket, an unzipped backpack, or in easy reach to others, as it can make you an easy target.

If you want to keep it somewhere on your person, put it in your front pocket, or make sure it is stored away in a zipped section of a purse or bag.

Make sure location tracking is turned on

If the worst happens and your phone is stolen, it isn’t always the end of the world. In fact, having phone tracking or location services turned on might be able to help you locate it.

To allow you to do this, make sure that before you leave for your holiday any location tracking apps such as iPhone’s ‘Find My iPhone’ or Google’s ‘Find My Device ‘are turned on - if the tracking systems are not enabled before it is stolen, you won’t be able to track your phone.

There are some apps available that have features such as a camera trap to catch photos of people who try to access your mobile without permission, you could explore as well.

Make sure your phone is password protected

A surprising amount of people in the UK do not have a password to protect their mobile phone, meaning that if you accidentally leave it somewhere, or someone else manages to get hold of it, they’ll be able to access your information almost immediately.

To prevent this from happening, make sure you have password settings turned on as a line of defence from pickpockets, or better yet, enable your phone's fingerprint or face ID scanner before jetting off, as it can make it even harder for your information to be accessed.

Not only that but if your phone is password or security protected, it may mean that you have a better chance of finding it again as if someone grabs it and can’t use it, it is likely they will discard it to find an easier target.

Buy a shock-proof phone case and/or screen protector

While it might be a given having a shock-proof or protective cover on your phone, is one of the simplest ways to keep your phone from getting damaged while you are on holiday.

Phones these days are actually a lot less durable than you might think, so having a case to keep it from getting damaged when you may not have access to a phone repair service, will be crucial when going on holiday this year.

Backup your phone before travelling

If you’re worried that your phone might get damaged while on holiday, one thing you can do to protect photos, contact details and more, is by backing it up before you go away.

To do this, simply go to your phone's system settings and find the backup option. On iPhone, this will be located under ‘iCloud > iCloud Backup > Backup Now. On Androids you should be able to access backup by going to Settings > System > Backup > Backup Now.

If your phone is already backed up when your phone gets damaged or lost, you will still be able to access all of your information remotely.

Make sure you have travel insurance or phone cover

While again it might be fairly obvious, one of the most important things you can do to protect your phone from damage or theft when on holiday, is by making sure it is covered either through your phone network, or travel insurance.

Travel insurance is something that a lot of people often overlook, but if you have the right plan in place when your phone breaks while on holiday, you might be able to get compensation or money to help you cover a replacement when you return home.
